Ready for something different...
Today is National Pieorgi Day and Mr. L will be having them for lunch. Buffalo has a big "Polish" population. Mr. L's mother was a first generation American of Polish descent and made all kinds of great Polish dishes.
I'm on the fence about pierogi. I like potatoes, but I'm not a big cheese fan. We've tried as many versions of Mrs. T's pierogi as we could find and I absolutely LOVED the jalapeƱo kind, but then we couldn't get them again. Mr. L will eat them just boiled, but I like them fried with onions.
I'm sure my character, Jeff Resnick (from the Jeff Resnick Mysteries) has eaten his share of pieorgi, but he's never mentioned it to me.
Are you a pieorgi fan and if so, what's your favorite kind?
P.S. Don't these pieorgis look fabulous?

Available for Preorder: A Part Of The Pattern
What? Isn't that plagiarism? No, not when it's just a sentence. And that sentence was written by one of my favorite authors, Barbara Michaels. In fact, it was her romantic suspense novels (with a paranormal thread) that inspired me to write my Jeff Resnick Mysteries.
Authors do variations on a theme all the time. My friend Pat Ryan did a variation on Hitchcock's film, Rear Window, with one of her historical romances. There have been scores of take-offs based on the work of Jane Austen, etc. (Pride and Prejudice with zombies, for instance.)
I've been wrestling with how to continue Jeff's story arc after the devastating events in the most recent novel, Shattered Spirits. I often reread my favorite books and about three weeks ago I reread Ms. Michaels' book The Dancing Floor. In it, one of the characters tells another: "You're a part of the pattern." I got stuck on that one paragraph and that sentence, and reread it several times. I kept thinking about it over and over again and that got me inspired to tell Jeff's story--how he became a part of the pattern. And, truthfully, until I started writing the story, I had no clue there actually was a pattern.
I knew there wasn't a novel in this tale, so decided to make it a bridge story. By dealing with the subject of Jeff and Richard starting their own business, they are free to jump right into a case in the next novel. Whew! Big relief. Of course, what that case may be--I have no clue. I have two other books to write before I can deal with that, but that lets me start noodling, and there's where the story will come from; my subconscious
So, Jeff has a mini-mystery and readers have a new (longish) short story to read. And, of course, it's called A PART OF THE PATTERN. It'll be available September 18th from all ebook distributors. Here's the description:
.Jeff Resnick finds himself drawn to solving crimes. His brother, Richard, thinks that could be the basis of a paying business. Reluctantly, Jeff agrees, and their first case is about a a child who vanished more than two decades before. Meanwhile, Jeff bumps into an acquaintance whose history is very similar to that of the missing girl. Is it coincidence or is there a pattern that links him to her and his future?

In the Spotlight: Brenda Stanley
My name is Brenda Stanley. I'm a wife, a mom, a sister-in-law, a sister, a friend, a daughter, and a nurse, and that's pretty much how I define myself--at least at this stage of my life. Talk to me in a week and the order might be different.
Most of the time, I lead a pretty nice, quiet (rather boring) life in Buffalo, NY. I'm not from Western New York. I was born in the city of brotherly love (Philadelphia), and lived there for the first twenty five years of my life.
Of course, he wasn't my husband right away. In fact, he was my boss. I know, I know--you should never get involved with your boss, but he was such a nice guy. I admit; it was me who pursued him. He'd been unlucky in love--and more than once--so he wasn't looking for someone to warm his bed. I called him "Boss." (It drove him nuts. Do you see a pattern here?) Hey, Boss! Here're those files you needed. Hey, Boss did you remember to eat today? Hey, Boss, aren't these the cutest shoes you've ever seen? (Insert image of him rolling his eyes at that. He's just not into shoes.)
I never called him by his first name at work. It was either Boss or Dr. Alpert. I never called him boss at home. Uh, we kind of moved in together after a couple of years.
The Boss, er, I mean Richard, thought it would be a good idea if we got married. (He's old fashioned that way.) I loved him. I loved being with him. But married? Been there, done that--wasn't about to go for it again. He asked a lot. I turned him down a lot.
Money at the think tank was getting tight, and they decided to eliminate our little two-person department. So, that job ended and Richard, decided he would like to leave the land of sunshine and move back to his hometown of Buffalo, New York--in JANUARY. (He did consult me, but I could see his mind was pretty much made up.) I knew about winter in the Northeast. Hey, I'm from Philly, but Buffalo winters are different. It's called lake-effect snow and it's brutal. Richard wasn't exactly the most jolly person to be around right about then, either. (Men. Job loss. Ego. The whole deal.) And then one morning, very early ... the phone rang.
It was the NYPD calling to say Richard's half-brother, Jeffy (I always call him that. Drives him nuts) had been brutally mugged and was in a coma. You never saw somebody hop on a plane so fast in your life. I spent a terrible few days alone in that big (COLD), lonely house on my own, wishing I had gone with him; but the furnace guy was coming and somebody had to be there to open the door. I'd met Jeffy exactly twice when he came back to Buffalo to live with us in the house he had occupied for three-plus very unhappy years as a teen, so you can imagine how thrilled he was to be returning. (Not at all.) Nobody likes charity, and he least of all. He was determined to recover and get the hell out. But it didn't happen that way, and life for all of us became very complicated.
Jeffy's kind of hard to get to know. He doesn't reveal much about himself. He's quiet--doesn't make waves ... until he gets what I call one of his "episodes." When his psychic insight makes an appearance all hell can break loose, and it didn't take long after he returned to Buffalo for him to start to have some pretty scary visions. Visions that gave him information about a murder. And didn't he feel compelled to find out who did the deed? It wasn't a pretty end. Richard ended up in the hospital--nearly died. Oh, God, what a mess. But ... it brought us all closer. And I kind of changed my mind about the whole marriage thing ,,,
But that was just the beginning of our adventures. Okay, I mostly sit on the sidelines while the dynamic duo do their investigating thing. I did the volunteer thing for a while at a women's health clinic and the local hospital's low-income clinic. I loved the work. I loved the people. But then ... someone decided to stalk me. And wouldn't you know it--my ex-husband showed up on our doorstep about the same time. (My mother gave him my address. *Sigh* I was remarried--why would she think I'd be interested in seeing him?)
What an awful time in our lives ... because I also had a miscarriage. I quit my jobs. The stalker actually broke into our home--oh, it was awful. For a while, I didn't know if I could even live in that house again.
I could go on and on ... but maybe it would just be better if you read about our "adventures." Jeffy kind of keeps an account of things. The first account is known as Murder On The Mind. (And it's FREE in all ebook formats. Click this link for more information.)
Jeffy never looks for trouble--but somehow it always finds him. He's just wrapping up the account of our most recent trials and tribulations. It's called Shattered Spirits. (You can read about it here.)
Okay, it's time for me to get back to keeping the home fires burning. At least ... until the next time Jeffy has one of his episodes, because when they come, we never know what will happen next.
P.S. Feel free to ask any questions about the Alpert-Stanley-Resnick household. I know just about everything that goes on. (Just about.)

New to you!
My friend Mary Kennedy and I are celebrating because we've both got new books out. As this is my blog (tee hee), I'll go with mine first.
My readers asked for it, and I've delivered. A Jeff Resnick Six Pack features all six Jeff Resnick "short" stories. (Some are a lot longer than others.)
This collection of short stories bridges the gaps between the Jeff Resnick novels of suspense and intrigue.
When The Spirit Moves You: Does Jeff believe in ghosts?
Bah! Humbug: Christmas with his girlfriend Maggie’s family is anything but merry.
Cold Case: A small boy is missing. Can Jeff find him?
Spooked!: A malevolent spirit visits for Halloween.
Crybaby: Have diaper bag—will travel!
Eyewitness: Jeff can’t move ahead in live until he finds out who murdered his wife.
Trade paperback | Kindle US | Kindle Worldwide
Kobo | iBooks | Nook Coming soon to audio!
And second in the Hollywood Nights series from Mary Kennedy ... MOVIE STAR!
Jessie Phillips and her friend, Tracy, go Hollywood when a film company chooses Fairmont Academy as the setting for a sizzling thriller. Sparks fly off and on the set as the teens become embroiled in a mystery fit for the big screen, and things heat up for Jessie when the film’s star Shane Rockett takes a shine to her. Will Jessie score more than her fifteen-minutes of fame?
(This novel won an award and grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for "artistic excellence in literary fiction.”)

Jeff Resnick seeks closure ...
Jeff Resnick needs one thing to help him move on with his life ...
It's a terrible thing to have to face death. That's what I've been doing for the past nine months since my mother was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. She lost her fight this past weekend, but she was feisty right to the end. Given six months, she snubbed her nose at the oncologist and lived an extra three months and three days. I told her, "You go, girl!"
I know from past experience how grief can take a toll, and maybe that's why I wrote Eyewitness during this terrible time of uncertainty. Jeff Resnick never really recovered from the loss of his wife, Shelley. She left him. She stole from him. She did everything she could to ensure that he would hate her forever. And yet ...there's only one way Jeff can find closure. He has to find the man who killed Shelley Resnick.
If you're a Jeff fan, I hope you'll give Eyewitness a chance.

Dark Waters await ...
Wow -- a lot has been going on behind the scenes of late. Not only are the Victoria Square books coming out in audio, they are now available in e format for the UK, AU, NL, and Ireland.
Also brand new is my latest audiobook from my Jeff Resnick Mystery series, DARK WATERS, which is narrated by Steven Barnett.
For Jeff Resnick, the trouble starts with a near-death experience. Brenda's family comes to visit and one of them reminds Jeff of the thugs who mugged him. His brother has taken possession of an expensive boat. The yacht holds a deadly secret, one destined to turn his world upside down. Will Jeff solve the puzzle before his vision of near death becomes a reality?

Live and soon to be live ....
Ever since I returned from the Ninc conference in late October, I've been hustling my butt working on a number of projects, some of which are now live and some that are still in the works. (I'll talk about that more in a week or so.)
Cheated By Death in audio!
(Jeff Resnick Mystery #4)
I've got a fabulous new narrator, Steven Barnett, and I'm hoping that we can re-record the earlier books in the series so that Steven will be the voice of Jeff Resnick.
Audible US | Audible UK | Amazon | iTunes
To read more about the book, click this link to my website.
As I mentioned last week, BOUND BY SUGGESTION (Jeff Resnick Mystery #5) is also now available in audio. OMG -- I'm thrilled with Steven's performance. It sure had me on the edge of my seat, and I wrote it!
Evolution: Jeff Resnick's Backstory
There's something about this book that haunts me. I think I've read it six times in the last month. I keep going back to it, and I don't usually go back and read my own stuff. (Although I do like to listen to it on audio in the car.) Maybe it's the whole "coming of age" aspect of the stories.
Not only is the book now available as a trade paperback, it'll soon be available in audio, too. (Again, performed by Steven Barnett.) I'll let you know when that happens. So far I've confined distribution to just Amazon because the paperbacks don't sell as well as the ebooks and there are costs associated with distribution (like being forced to not only give hefty discounts, but pay for returns--OUCH!).

Tales Of Telenia: THRESHOLD
I don't know why this book doesn't seem to resonate with readers. It sure resonates with me. Why? I'm not sure. I just know it, and the second book in the series, JOURNEY, were a heck of a lot of fun to write. I really enjoyed the experience and I thought my readers might be willing to leave their comfort zones to give my character Amanda Shelton a try. But I live in hope. The sales for Evolution have picked up since the paperback edition came out. I'm hoping Amanda will have the same kind of luck.
If the sales pick up, not only will I squeeze the next book into my writing schedule, but I'll release the series as audiobooks, too.

A book to be proud of
In particular, I've been listening to the latest Jeff Resnick Mystery which is now available on audio, BOUND BY SUGGESTION. I've had it since before Christmas and have listened to the complete story at least four times. I've listened to the last 5-6 chapters at least 8 or 9 times.
Why?
Because it turns out I wrote a pretty exciting book.
Not all audiobooks are good. You have to find the right voice. Example: The narrator for the first audio edition of Murder on the Mind was ALL WRONG for Jeff, and even worse for Richard. (I never did make it past the first CD because I kept cringing.)
I found the right voice in an audio producer named Steven Barnett (who has also performed Cheated By Death). Steven makes the story leap out of the speakers! The voices of the characters are pretty much perfect, especially Jeff, Richard, and Brenda. (Yeah, he even does good women's voices!)
I am just so proud of the book, and especially this audio edition. I hope my readers/listeners will be, too.
It's now available from:
Audible US | Audible UK | iTunes | Amazon
P.S. Steven is already working on the next book in the series, Dark Waters, and will soon begin Evolution: Jeff Resnick's backstory. I can't wait!

On the horizon: CRYBABY
Some people give themselves expensive Christmas gifts. Some just trinkets. I think most people don't even give themselves a gift. When I give myself a Christmas gift, it's usually time off to write something I really want to write.
This year I gave myself the time to write a short story featuring my favorite character, Jeff Resnick.

Pets who read mysteries
Last week I ran a contest on my blog and Facebook: Send me a picture of your pet reading my book to enter for a chance to get an advance review copy of my latest Booktown Mystery, BOOK CLUBBED (which will be available on July 1st). I had a great response.

To the right is Laura I's girl Kit-Kat. She told her mom, "Stop bugging me with this picture taking...can't you see I'm about to sink my teeth into Lorna Barrett's Murder Is Binding?!"
The book was also very popular with dogs, such as Leah A's girl Olive (at left)
It turns out that not just cats and dogs like to catch up on the Booktown Mysteries. Bunnies like Linda D's Hannah like the series, too! (That's Bookmarked for Death, the 2nd book in the series.)
A few of the pets decided to try my other series, like Linda's K's dog Gizmo decided to read One Hot Murder (the third book in my Victoria Square mystery series).
Some people don't have pets, so they got creative. Like Jennifer S. Her stuffed Shrek liked Not The Killing Type (which comes out in paperback on July 1st). He read it on her e reader. (Smart little guy, huh?)
I got many more entries, and I'll be posting all of them on Facebook during the next week or so. I hope you'll visit my profile page to see them and comment on them!
See you there!
